£200m boost for university building

More than 50 Higher Education Institutions will get a share of ВЈ200m in cash brought forward to fund building projects.

The Higher Education Funding Council for England today announced ВЈ150m will be shared among 97 schemes. A second round has now opened for the remaining ВЈ50m, and the total amount will be spent by the end of the next financial year.

John Denham, Secretary of State for Higher Education, said: "It is crucial for the future financial health of this country that we fund projects such as these to help people and businesses through the downturn. Each of these projects will secure work for those in vital building and construction roles throughout the UK.

"Spending on our higher education institutions is essential, especially during difficult economic times. From ВЈ11million for new buildings to ВЈ50,000 for improved generators, these are real facilities designed to make a real difference to the lives of both students and local people."
