HSE appoints translators to improve safety among migrant workers

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is to appoint translators to help improve safety among Polish, Romanian and Indian construction workers.

London-based, the 'outreach roles' will aim to increase workers' awareness of health and safety, and also legal rights.

Each outreach worker will be appointed for a 12-month contract. Applicants must be fluent in Polish, Romanian or Gujarati, as well as English.

The HSE said construction workers from ethnic groups often had a poor grasp English, which in turn had an adverse impact on site safety.

Last year, accidents on construction sites involving migrant workers were up 50%.
